& Juliet at Bass Concert Hall

and Juliet at Bass Concert Hall

“The audience goes wild!” – New York Times

What if Juliet woke up next to Romeo and decided that she’d rather live the teenage dream, and chose to live instead? What if she realized that she’s not a girl, not yet a woman, and left Verona to shake off being overprotected and tried to find her feet elsewhere – like… Paris, for instance? What if the world’s greatest love story turned out differently because Shakespeare listened when Anne Hathaway said “I want it that way”? What kinds of twists and turns would Juliet’s story have made if it wasn’t Romeo & Juliet, but just… & Juliet?

The answers to all of that are locked up in a glitter-soaked, high-octane, brand-smashing-new production that turned Broadway as we know it on its head! If you’ve been anywhere near Planet Earth in the last few decades, you’ll know pretty much all the songs – and you’ll adore them – from Larger Than Life and …Baby One More Time to Domino and Confident, from I Kissed A Girl and It’s My Life to Since U Been Gone and Can’t Stop The Feeling!; if you’ve ever craved a chuckle, or even side-splitting humour paired with larger than life stagecraft – this one has got it all and then some; if you’ve been getting bored with the same-same, then it’s time for a tongue-in-cheek teenage bubblegum rom-com – on stage, dazzling, uplifting, and smashing it out of the ballpark! And Austin, it’s all yours for the taking this season, because & JULIET is coming to the Bass Concert Hall!

SYNOPSIS

William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne, suggests that he changes the ending of Romeo & Juliet – already a play very much f***in’ perfect, and much to his displeasure. She explains her idea of an alternative ending – one where Juliet doesn’t kill herself next to Romeo, but rather chooses to live… baby, one more time.

At Romeo’s funeral, Juliet finds out that Romeo wasn’t hers only – he had many affairs – a massive problem indeed. Juliet’s parents decide to send her to a convent, but instead of going, she heads off to Paris alongside her friends. There she meets François – and the sparks fly. When Juliet’s parents arrive to take her to the convent, she hastily accepts François’ marriage proposal, and Shakespeare is once again forcing Juliet into marriage – much to Anne’s dismay… but Juliet is just so much stronger.

However, François and May share a kiss, leaving them all rather conflicted – and to top it all, Romeo returns, confessing his love for Juliet.

The question is – will Juliet go back to Romeo and the story ends William-way, or will Juliet cling onto her own choices and live her own life – and Anne Hath-her-way?

CREATIVE TEAM

& JULIET: a coming-of-age jukebox musical stuffed to the brim with chunky, hooky, belty, dancy, and super-poppy music; bursting at the seams with interesting arrangements, that good ol’ razzle dazzle, glitz and glamour – and of course, at the core of it, is a highly accomplished and internationally acclaimed creative team.

Award-winning director Luke Sheppard (Starlight Express; The Little Big Things; Just For One Day; In Dreams) has once again outdone himself – but then again, what can one expect other than just perfection? Together with Jennifer Weber’s high-octane choreography, Soutra Gilmour’s playful sets, Paloma Young’s hilariously hybrid Elizabethan costumes, Howard Hudson’s cotton-candy lighting, Gareth Owen’s wonderful sound design, and Bill Sherman and Dominic Fallacaro’s incredible musical direction, arrangements and orchestrations that breathe life into the very music that was the soundtrack to countless lives, the creative team has created a dazzling production that basks in standing ovations galore.

“A stellar production, pop music you know, and some of the best performances you’ll see this year makes & JULIET one show not to miss when it comes to your town (or nearby).” – Hotchka

CAST

The genuinely inclusive, wonderfully talented, and insanely chemistry-oozing cast that will be taking North America on a total girl-power romp this season, include Rachel Simone Webb as Juliet, Paul-Jordan Jansen as Lance, Teal Wicks as Anne, Corey Mach as Shakespeare, Nick Drake as May, Kathryn Allison as Angélique, Michael Canu as Romeo, and Mateus Leite Cardoso as François.

“It’s a boost of serotonin from the first notes of music, and the party continues through the curtain call. & JULIET is by far one of the best nights of theatre you could imagine.” – BroadwayWorld

HISTORY & LEGACY

& JULIET is high-powered, humorous, glitter-soaked brainchild of writer David West Read and Swedish pop-powerhouse Max Martin and friends, giving Shakespeare’s legendary Romeo & Juliet a complete makeover. The larger than life musical premiered in 2019 at the Manchester Opera House, transferring to the West End in the same year. & JULIET opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in 2022, and just as on the West End, knocked the world of the performance arts completely off its axis.

To date, & JULIET’s award-shelf is groaning heavily under the weight of three Laurence Olivier Awards, a Black British Theatre Award, a Mousetrap Award, nine Tony Award nominations, two Drama Desk Award nominations, six Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, and a Chita Rivera Award nomination.
