Plot

Set in 1922 Long Island, the tale follows Midwesterner Nick Carraway as he rents a humble cottage next to the extravagant millionaire Jay Gatsby. Amazed by Gatsby's extravagant parties and mysterious persona, Nick discovers Gatsby's intense quest to reunite with his lost sweetheart, Daisy Buchanan, now wedded to the wealthy but disloyal Tom. As secrets unravel, including affairs, deceptions and tragic confrontations - the story takes a turn into unrealistic dreams amid societal pressures. Through uplifting songs like "Roaring On," the musical weaves a story of desire, deception and inevitable downfall.

The Production

This outstanding show is put together by a gifted team led by Ryan McCartan as the charming Jay Gatsby, Aisha Jackson as the dreamy Daisy Buchanan, Michael Maliakel as narrator Nick Carraway, Samantha Pauly as the witty Jordan Baker, Austin Colby as the domineering Tom Buchanan, Charlie Pollock as the downtrodden George Wilson, and Eric Anderson as the shrewd Meyer Wolfsheim. Directed by Marc Bruni, with energetic movement by Dominique Kelley and an original score by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen.

Adapted on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic, "The Great Gatsby" debuted at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2023 prior to making its Broadway premiere in April 2024 at the Broadway Theatre. It won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical, celebrating its lavish 1920s styles.
