S.E. Hinton’s retro classic ‘The Outsiders’ was a literary staple in every single middle and high school English class|has been one of those books everybody need to read at least once in their lives since it was first released}, and even though some eyebrows were raised at the no holds barred content touching on brutality, addiction, depression, and socio-economic hardships, we were all moved by the relevance of the tale of Tonyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, Sodapop Curtis, Cherry Valance and the others.
The success of the novel, however, left some massive shoes to fill, and the question is whether that is even remotely possible.
And the answer is a resounding yes! Since ’The Outsiders’ much anticipated premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and whirlwinding into Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in 2024, ‘The Outsiders’ took a firm hold of every audience member, making them fall in love with the beloved story all over again. The intricate amalgamation of story, sound, lights, and movement results in powerful, unparalleled imagery that will linger in any audience member’s mind for a long time afterwards.
Add a 60s-sounding score tinged with folk influences and a dash of pop-country such as ’Throwing in the Towel’, ‘Grease Got a Hold’, ’Death’s at My Door’, and ‘I Could Talk to You All Night’, delivered in the breathtaking voices of a stellar cast peppered with debuts, a generous serving of captivating visual imagery, jaw-dropping choreography, a gritty, yet stunning warehouse-like set, and a spirited, visceral spin on the violence, and top it with theatricality that flexes every single muscle and pops every vein, and you have a production that is on track to become one of Broadway’s biggest productions.
‘The Outsiders’ ticks all the boxes and then some: just enough newness and familiarity for that x-factor you won’t easily find, the struggles of have-nots that are trying to make their small town dreams come true in a world with everything against them, questions about the exposure of teenage boys to violence and harm, the difficulties of being an outsider, and the struggles of having a lot of heart and remaining truthful in an unkind world, that moment you grasp that you’re actually witnessing one of the world’s best, latest productions and the realization that every single award that came in the direction of ‘The Outsiders’ was well deserved - including four Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award.
It’s undeniable: ‘The Outsiders’ is an outsider stepping into the inner-circle of top Broadway productions.
