The Sound of Music at Bass Concert Hall
“THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a veritable old warhorse of the Broadway musical canon, and it has stood the test of the vicissitudes of time.” – Broadway World
The hills are truly alive with the sound of music – and this season, not only the hills, but stages all across North America too! It’s been long determined – Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC is one of the world’s favorite things, and even after teaching the world the Do-Re-Mi’s for six decades, it will certainly continue to show us how love can survive for decades to come. It climbs ev’ry mountain, melts ev’ry heart, and ticks ev’ry box – from the wonderful love story at the very core of it and the feel-good vibe of the classic musical to the captivating scenery and infectious songs that you’ll be humming for weeks to come. THE SOUND AND MUSIC is tried and tested, and every single time it hits the stage, audiences fall in love with the iconic theatrepiece all over again – much like Maria and Captain Von Trapp.
A musical with more well-known numbers is yet to be written; a piece that rings as true now as it did back then does not exist; and theatre experiences that leaves hearts full and ears blessed quite like this one are nowhere to be found. And this season, it’s your turn – because award-winning director Jack O’Brien has polished this theatrical gem, making THE SOUND OF MUSIC shine fresh like a new penny, and it is coming to the Bass Concert Hall soon!

SYNOPSIS
“It’s a warm, well-paced, crowd-pleasing production that knows exactly what it’s doing.” – Stage and Cinema
It is just before World War II, and Maria Rainer, a postulant, is faced with a dilemma – to leave the gloriously beautiful hills behind and return to the abbey to further consider her commitment to monastic life. Upon the Mother Abbess’ recommendation, Maria decides to take on the position of governess to the seven children of a widower, Austro-Hungarian Navy submarine Captain Georg von Trapp.
In a household run under a strict regime, where music has taken a backseat and children don’t play, Maria takes it upon herself to bring joy and music back to the Von Trapp household. Under not only the imminent threat of a Nazi-takeover and other social issues, but also having fallen in love with Captain von Trapp – an engaged-to-be-married man, Maria is faced with yet another dilemma – to listen to her heart and stay, or to return to the abbey and become a nun, as she has always dreamt to do.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a diamond – one that will have you smiling, singing, swooning, and swaying the whole way through. From the love that blooms like Edelweiss between Maria and Captain von Trapp to the well-behaved, yet unruly children that crawls into anyone’s heart at the blink of an eye, from the beauty of the nuns’ singing to the message of hope, endurance, and overcoming adversity, THE SOUND OF MUSIC has been fine-tuned to perfection and if you haven’t absolutely adored it before, you will after you have experienced it for yourself.
“… swells with idealistic love and lush orchestrations and is a clarion call to the ideals of perseverance and devotion… – Broadway World

HISTORY & LEGACY
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is the brainchild of director Vincent J. Donehue, who initially suggested that the tale based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, should be adapted into a play. The original idea was that writers Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse would write the play featuring songs taken from the Trapp Family Singers’ repertoire, but after adding some original music by the iconic theatre composer-team Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, it was developed into a full-fledged musical.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC opened in 1959 in the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, after which it moved to Broadway, having its premiere in the same year in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The production was an instant success, racking up numerous awards. Now, over six decades later, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a musical theatre must – not only for audiences around the world to see and for theatres to produce, but also its music, which became musical theatre staples. THE SOUND OF MUSIC was also adapted for film, featuring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp, becoming a massive success, just like its theatrical predecessor.
To date, THE SOUND OF MUSIC received five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
“With its timeless story and irresistibly charming score, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic isn’t just meant to be enjoyed – it’s meant to be shared.” – The Kennedy Centre
